As India readies itself for one of its most sacred festivals, Chhath Puja 2025 will kick off on October 25 and run through October 28, celebrating four days of faith, rigor, and eco-awareness. The festival this year is anticipated to bring in a whopping ₹38,000 crore in commerce throughout the nation, both a testament to the cultural richness and economic importance of the festival.

The celebration will begin with Nahay Khay on October 25, then Kharna, Sandhya Arghya (evening worship of the setting sun), and end with Usha Arghya (morning worship of the rising sun) on October 28. Devotees keep strict fasts, go for holy baths in rivers or ghats, and worship the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya, thanking them for life, health, and prosperity.

At places such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Delhi, local governments have initiated large-scale preparations. In Lucknow, the Gomti ghats are being illuminated with floral lights and high-security arrangements. Ghaziabad’s Hindon Ghat will be provided with elaborate cleaning and crowd control measures to deal with the huge number of devotees likely to visit the Sandhya and Usha Arghya rituals. Haryana officials, meanwhile, have let out more water in the Yamuna River to provide enough flow for devotees to conduct rituals.

Schools and colleges in Bihar, UP, and Delhi have announced a holiday between October 25 and 28 to enable families to participate in the spiritual practices in full. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called upon citizens to post traditional Chhath songs and cultural materials to instill the sentiment of oneness and devotion.

Economically too, Chhath Puja remains a source of empowerment for local traders and artisans. The increase in demand for puja items like bamboo baskets, sugarcane, fruits, sweets, and clay lamps is a testament to the strong connection between traditional practices and India’s small-scale economy. Experts say that the festival not only reinforces cultural foundations but also acts as a catalyst for rural and urban trade.

With mounting concerns for the environment, governments are also looking towards clean riverbanks, proper waste management, and eco-friendly materials for offerings. As the country gets ready for this big celebration of nature and religion, Chhath Puja 2025 is a reflection of India’s time-old traditions meshing with contemporary civic awareness.
