Renowned Bollywood actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, died on October 20, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 84. The legendary actor, who had entertained generations of filmgoers with his unparalleled comic sense of timing and iconic character roles, had been suffering from age-related health issues for the last several months. His death brings an era to an end in Hindi cinema.
As per reports, Asrani was admitted at a hospital in Mumbai as he faced breathing issues and other ailments. In spite of all the medical interventions, he passed away on Sunday night. His family released an emotional message stating, “Our dear, the person who put smiles on the face of everyone, Asrani ji is no longer here. He has left an irreversible void for both Hindi cinema and our hearts.”
The actor’s last rites were held privately at Santacruz Crematorium in Mumbai, as per his wishes. Close friends and family attended the ceremony in a quiet farewell to one of Bollywood’s most loved faces. Asrani had a career of over five decades with appearances in over 300 films. He started his career in the 1960s and emerged as one of the most popular character artists and comedians in the business. His most memorable role as the quirky jailer in Ramesh Sippy’s “Sholay” is forever etched on the pages of cinema, particularly his dialogue—”Hum Angrezon ke zamane ke jailer hain.”
Tributes came in from all over the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also posted his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A talented performer and an extremely versatile artist, he brought laughter and joy to so many lives.” Actor Akshay Kumar also posted his grief, remembering their recent encounter and stating, “We hugged each other just last week. Can’t believe he’s no more.”
Asrani was born in Jaipur in 1941 in a humble household. His father used to sell carpets, and Asrani learned acting while pursuing a career as a voice artist by night. His skillfulness did not go unnoticed for long, and he soon collaborated with such legends as Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, and Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
With Govardhan Asrani death, Bollywood not only loses an actor but also a point of humor, humility, and heart. Asrani leaves a vibrant legacy of laughter that will continue to connect to the people for centuries.
