Popular folk and devotional singer Maithili Thakur has officially made a foray into politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025. The singer, who is famous for reviving Maithili and classical music traditions, was welcomed into the party in Patna in the presence of the top BJP leaders. Within minutes of her induction, the BJP declared her to contest from the Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga, a major region in the Mithilanchal belt.

Addressing the function, Maithili Thakur stated that her top priority is to serve society and not pursue political power. “I have always believed in keeping culture intact and giving back to society. Becoming part of BJP provides me with a wider platform to do so,” she stated. Her induction is perceived as a strategic step by the BJP to reach out to the youth and cultural communities of northern Bihar.

The BJP’s second list of 12 candidates, released earlier this week, confirmed her name from Alinagar, alongside other prominent figures such as former IPS officer Anand Mishra, who will contest from Buxar. Party insiders believe Maithili’s clean image and grassroots popularity will strengthen the BJP’s reach in the Darbhanga–Mithilanchal region, an area deeply rooted in cultural heritage and traditional values.

The Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, 2025, are expected to be highly competitive. The BJP is positioning itself to reclaim influence in the state, focusing on youth icons, regional pride, and development narratives. Maithili’s addition brings a unique cultural touch to the campaign, appealing to voters who resonate with her artistry and authenticity.

Prior to entering politics (Maithili Thakur Joins BJP), Maithili Thakur became nationally popular with her soulful performances on social media and reality television shows. She has repeatedly been praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her role in keeping Indian classical and regional music alive. Her entry into active politics has been welcomed with both enthusiasm and anticipation, with her supporters regarding her as a representation of “clean and value-based politics.”

With campaigning in full swing, all attention now focuses on Alinagar, where the popularity of Maithili Thakur and the BJP strategy will be put to the test at the polls.
