Former Boston Red Sox great and Lee County Commissioner Mike Greenwell died on Oct. 9, 2025, at age 62 following a valiant fight with medullary thyroid cancer. Greenwell, whose baseball success was only matched by his commitment to public service, leaves behind a lasting legacy in both sports and local government.

Greenwell played 12 years for the Boston Red Sox between 1985 and 1996, with a career batting average of .303, 130 home runs, and 726 RBIs. He was a two-time All-Star and finished in the second spot to win the American League MVP in 1988. He is one of the best players of his time thanks to his playing ability and consistency.

Greenwell went on to business and politics after retiring from baseball. He owned a number of businesses, including a construction firm and an amusement park in Cape Coral, Florida. He also operated a ranch in Alva, Florida, which he developed for housing and business use. In 2022, Greenwell was appointed to the Lee County Board of County Commissioners by Governor Ron DeSantis after the death of Commissioner Frank Mann. He subsequently won a full term in 2024, representing his community until his death.

Greenwell is also survived by his wife, Tracy, and their two sons, Bo and Garrett. Bo Greenwell was drafted as an outfielder in the 2007 MLB Draft and played eight years in the minor leagues, while Garrett played baseball at Santa Fe College and subsequently at Oral Roberts University.

The government of Lee County issued a statement in which they mourned his passing with great sorrow, noting that he was committed to the county and was working to represent local businesses as well as local residents. Greenwell is remembered by residents as well as fans not just for his achievements in Major League Baseball but also for his dedication to making his community better.

Mike Greenwell’s life was one of both on-field excellence and community involvement, which made him a popular figure both on and off the field. His on-field contribution to baseball and off-field contribution to public service will be remembered by constituents and fans alike.
