Undocumented Indian Immigrant Truck Driver, Under the Influence of Drugs, Causes Fatal Crash Killing 3 in the US

A 21-year-old Indian male– an undocumented immigrant to the US– has been charged with setting a fatal fireball semi-truck collision that claimed the lives of three individuals in Southern California. The individual, Jashanpreet Singh, was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter while under the influence after crashing his semi into stalled traffic on a San Bernardino County freeway, reported US news outlets.
Singh allegedly entered the southern border of the US in 2022. He had his initial experience with Border Patrol officers in California’s El Centro Sector during March 2022 but was released into the country’s interior by the Biden administration under the “alternatives to detention” policy– when illegal immigrants were released on their own recognizance awaiting hearings.

The wreck was recorded on Singh’s Freightliner tractor-trailer rig that crashed into the SUV, killing at least three individuals and injuring several others.
The three fatalities in the wreck have not yet been publicly identified. Among those injured were Singh and a mechanic who was helping to change the tyre of a car.

Police explained Singh never slowed down before he crashed into the traffic congestion, since he was stoned. Police explained his toxicology report supported the impairment.
“He was finally taken to the hospital, and he was examined by the medical staff, and our officers concluded that he was driving under the influence of drugs,” said CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez, quoted by ABC7 News.

The US Department of Homeland Security also stated that Singh has no legal immigration status in the US, and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USICE) has filed an immigration detainer against him after he was taken into custody, according to a Fox News report.
The accident is the most recent one involving illegal immigrant truck drivers in the US. In August, an Indian immigrant, Harjinder Singh, was charged with causing a fatal crash in Fort Pierce, Florida, killing three. According to reports, Harjinder Singh crossed illegally across the south US border in 2018 and got a commercial driver’s licence from California.
